The film that put Miramax schmaltz merchant Lasse Hallström (Chocolat)
on the map, this coming-of-age tale shows all the Swedish director's
trademarks: peculiar protagonist, small-town life and thorny themes
made digestible. Impish 12-year-old Ingemar (Anton Glanzelius) is
farmed out to relatives by his depressed mother. Cue jolly japes with
his uncle and sparring sessions with the local tomboy. Hallström is a
sensitive purveyor of pre-teen angst, but you'll need a sweet tooth to
consume. |
