Truly Madly Deeply joins hands with Brokeback Mountain along the Peruvian coastline in Javier Fuentes-León’s feature debut, a metaphysical romance centred on young fisherman Miguel (Cristian Mercado), a married pillar of the community who has a secret gay lover (Manolo Cardona). Fuentes-León probes Latin machismo, faith, rigid taboos and the nature of sexual identity while building sensitively to a poignant, watery climax. Persuasive performances from Undertow’s three leads (especially Tatiana Astengo in the ‘Michelle Williams’ role) aid him, as does the gorgeous scenery. |
