MGM's fantasy musical about the adventures of Dorothy (Judy Garland) in Oz deserves its enduring classic status. The once ground-breaking effects work shows its age, but the sets, costumes, make-up, songs and characters are all still enchanting.
The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz: The Making Of A Movie Classic documentary, trailers, out-takes/ deleted scenes, storyboards, costume/ make-up tests, excerpts from earlier Oz films, cast interviews, excerpts from the 1939 Academy Awards. If you can get past Angela Lansbury's cheesy narration, the Making Of documentary is packed with choice information. It's a bit light on the legendary tales of ribald munchkin misbehaviour, but the sheer wealth of archive material more than makes up for the kid-gloves approach. Best of all, though, is the deleted Jitterbug sequence, which features the four stars dancing in the Enchanted Forest.
