‘Das Boot in a tank’ is the quick-and-easy take on Lebanon, but Samuel Maoz’s wartime drama is so much more, a study in freakish claustrophobia that packs an antiwar punch to compare with The Hurt Locker.

Set during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, the film’s taut focus is four young Israelis locked into their hermetically sealed death machine.

Through their gunscopes they witness all manner of horrific skulduggery and inhumanity, fuelling their own doubts, fear and under-siege mentality (a metaphor for their country), leading to as much strife inside as out.

But through insulation comes perception, as Maoz turns emotional turmoil into truth. Forget the muddy politics – this time it’s personal.
