Hatched out of Miranda July's performance-art-wired brain, this is an eccentric, rewatchable Sundance oddity that deservedly captured hearts and minds last year.

Its spine is a misfit mismatch between July's fragile performance artist (she's playing herself, basically) and Richard (John Hawkes), a shoe salesman trying to cope with soul-hollowing disconnection from his two young sons. But the film's slap-in-the-face originality comes from bizarre situations and oddball characters who, for all their quirks, zing off the screen as real people, including an ordinary schmo coming onto a pair of flirty teens and a seven-year-old boy who gets involved in a deviant web-chat relationship.

It's loosely stitched and a bit scattershot, but Me, You... beats with a poetic heart - and always feels fresh, daring, never exploitative or pretentious. July divulges the film's long journey to the screen in a 30-minute chat, the pick of an hour's worth of extras.
