A study in empty elegance, Luca Guadagnino’s Visconti-styled saga of an unravelling Milanese clan sets out to cast a ravishing spell but keeps us at a remove from its on-screen passions.
As a detached Russian-born wife, Tilda Swinton speaks immaculate Italian, blending in well with the lavish décor as she embarks on an affair with a hunky young chef.
But her performance is as unrevealing as the rest of Guadagnino’s beauty pageant: a parade of ravishing wardrobe changes, tasteful bonking and operatic scoring. No more, no less. |
