A misleading label for this collection from the recently passed maestro, whose deliberate, unflashy, talk-heavy style even Tarantino admitted made for love-or-loathe cinema. The Sign Of Leo is the surprisingly desolate tale of a poverty-struck American émigré in Paris. Triple Agent is a commendable late-career effort based on the true story of a Russian exile who vanished in 1937 Paris. But Rohmer’s best work is missing here, with whinging-lovers’ triptych Rendez-Vous In Paris one to rile his detractors while trite bucolic nonsense The Romance Of Astrea And Celadon marks a sad end to an illustrious career. Unessential extras, too. |
